LANGUAGE AS A TOOL OF COMMUNICATION

Studying language is a habitual process. In our daily life we use language to make a good relationship or communication. What are the habits of language? The habits of language are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Among these 4 habits of the language, the most important is speaking. Because, by speaking we know directly what the speaker says. And most of our communication now is speaking. We speak and listen to one another much more speaking and listening than we write. But we don’t leave the others like writing, reading and listening, because all of it is important. Like writing, writing includes grammar, structure, and spelling. Reading practices our pronunciations in order to make us get fluent in speaking. Specifically, studying that we have been learning since Junior High School, some of us may have been studying it from Kinder Garden until this time. Everything we studied for the first time is difficult for us. We improve what we study step by step and we learn from our mistakes. So don’t be afraid to make mistakes because a single mistake can teach us to do better. Therefore, if we study a language we must study the basic structure and grammar of that language because grammar is a rule of a language that everyone who wants to learn has to know. For example, if we are in the class room or formal situations we must use formal language, but in informal situations we can use slang/informal language. However, the most important aspect in communication understands others and be understood by others or understand each others.
In our country the first language is mother tongue and we speak our own language because there are lots of ethnic groups in Indonesia. These languages are usually spoken by the people in respective areas. Most of us can speak at least two languages, Indonesian and our own regional languages. Many other languages and dialects are spoken by the Indonesian people. For example: Java, Borneo, Flores, Sumatra, Sulawesi and etc. speak according to their language each other and bahasa Indonesia is become the second language, even though bahasa Indonesia has been chosen as a national language of Indonesia. But we have to be proud because we are rich of languages. In this era globalization, we must know English because English are spoken all over the world as an international language and many sciences are taken from English. By knowing English our knowledge will be opened.
